Avenida Corrientes

Avenida Corrientes (2010) is a production by Winter Guests/Alan Lucien Øyen. Avenida Corrientes is the story of celebrated German choreographer Dieter Geier and his principle dancer and muse Augusto Garcia who return to Buenos Aires, the place of their first meeting, to create a new piece and attend a Gala in honour of their 10-year collaboration. The events and routines of a savage and passionate world of ballet are revealed as the two artists struggle towards the opening of their new work.

In Avenida Corrientes Øyen stages actor/director Andrew Wale and dancer Daniel Proietto in a genre-bending piece combining dance, theatre and film. Drawing inspiration from documentary filmmaking, dance-biographies and a philosophical essay on melancholy and cannibalism, the company writes its own story about a relationship of work and love set within a tense and pressurised world of dance.

During the process of putting together Avenida Corrientes, the company decided to make a 'documentary' film about the two central characters.  Eventually, this made its way on to the stage (projected on a 9 x 4 metre screen), and has become an integral part of the play.

To make the 'documentary' Winter Guests travelled to Argentina, where the Buenos Aires dance scene opened to them, offering locations and talents beyond the company's expectations - the home of ballet director Guido de Benedetti, onstage and off at Teatro Argentino and a special appearance by acclaimed choreographer Oscar Araiz.

Avenida Corrientes by Winter Guests/Alan Lucien Øyen was supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs/MFA (travel grant/performing arts).
