The action takes place at the end of the Viking Age, and the days prior to the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.

Among the characters are the king, Harald Sigurdsson AKA Harald Hardrada (in Norwegian: Hardråde, which means hard ruler or hard to rule), who in the play suffers heavy depressions. His son Olav has a weight problem and is in a serious relationship with God. There is a skald, Tjodolv, dreaming about writing a bestseller in an age of illiteracy, and an English Earl in forced exile, Tostig, or, in Norwegian, Toste, who is socially inept and may have problem with substance use.

At the webpage of Statsteatret the following, among other things, is written about 1066 – The Battle of Stamford Bridge:

"Statsteatret attacks Norwegian history and the king sagas in a no holds barred death match. What you thought you knew about the famous battle may be turned upside-down when the experienced actors take on history like a theatrical version of Mythbusters. Is the Viking inside still alive? This is tragicomedy about one of the worst battles in Norwegian history, in which 5000 Norwegians lost their lives in an attempt to conquer England."
