This Child

At the webpage of The Norwegian Theatre the following, among other things, is written about This Child:

"Through ten scenes, similar to short stories, from different families, we get to look at the diverse relationship between children and their parents.

Everybody is somebody's child. Every family has a history. Every new child and every new family carry the hope of a fair future and the dream of a better life. A child can be a way of realising one's own potential, an accident or a strong wish. The bond between child and parent is eternal. Reality is rarely the way one dreams of, but it can have many - or fewer - happy moments. Raising a child is like forming the sand: You may try to shape it in your image, to make your mark. But it often turns out differently than you imagined, and it can easily go asunder.

In a high-rise, one finds all kinds of people and families. In 2002, when the French playwright Joël Pommerat was commissioned to write a play about being a parent, on commission from child protection services in Normandie, he used a high-rise in this area as his starting point. The text is based on a series of interviews with families, in addition to texts inspired by other writers, and it shows a sensational realism. In 2006, Pommerat was given a French critics' award for the play, which has later been performed by child protection institutions and by theatres in many countries."
