Inheritance

Inheritance by Gyrid Axe Øvsteng had its world wide premiere in The Open Theatre (Det Åpne Teater) during The Contemporary Stage Festival 2005.

Inheritance was a fairytale about the absurdities that take place where the inheritance is to be split among brothers and there is nothing hidden in the mattress.

More

Inheritance by Gyrid Axe Øvsteng found inspiration in Norwegian folk tales:

"Once upon a time there was a mother who had three sons called Per, Pål and Espen. Her sons wanted to travel out in the world and to test fate for happiness, and because they were friends and eager to remain so they went together. I found, I found, what did you find, throw it away, I have other things to do and other things to carry. Once upon a time three brothers had a dead mother and her things went straight into the garbage. There was a new hide and the trash filled with gold and there were gold digger brothers and other things to do and other things to carry. There was a cavity in the chair and they went and went and there was a mother in the chair and they never got to the door, they wanted out to test fate for happiness. There was a new hide over the chair and it never got to the door, out to find and friends and eager to remain so and blood in the chair. I found, I found, what did you find, let me see, let me have it. And there was happily ever after and the fairytale never ended."

In 2001 Gyrid Axe Øvsteng was one of three students in The Pilot Project for Playwrights, an educational project in collaboration between The National Theatre, The Norwegian Theatre, The Open Theatre (Det Åpne Teater) and The National Academy of Theatre, Oslo. She graduated from the two year long Pilot Project for Playwrights in 2003.

Inheritance was her first full-length play and it was selected among 70 titled, to become the main production of The Open Theatre (Det Åpne Teater) in 2005.
