In a press release from The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Desire Under The Elms:

"Eugene O'Neill's intense family tragedy Desire Under The Elms from 1924 is a dripping hot, intense and terrible drama about greed, hatred and love. Directed by Victoria Meirik, this will be a claustrophobic family confrontation. At Amfiscenen (The Amphi Stage), the audience is gathered together with the actors in a room they can't break out of, in the small, intense world of the characters, where the clammy hand of greed strangles everyone who tries to break loose."

At the website of The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Desire Under The Elms:

"When the aging widower Ephraim returns to his farm with his third wife, Abbie, his three adult sons understand that they will never inherit the farm. The two eldest leave for California in hope of fortune, whereas the youngest son, Eben, stays at home. He thinks he is the one most entitled to the inheritance, that the farm really belongs to his late mother. He hates his father's young wife. To begin with.

Eventually, a burning desire develops between Eben and Abbie, and when Abbie gives birth to a son, Ephraim is the only one not to understand who the father is. He wants to leave the farm to this new boy. When Eben finds out that this was Abbie's plan from the beginning, his dream of the farm and his devotion to her both break. She must prove her love for Eben in the worst imaginable way."
