At the website of The National Theatre the following, among other things, is written about Mysteries:

"A yellow-clad man named Nagel arrives in the small town with a bottle of prussic acid hidden in the pocket of his west. Coincidentally this takes place on the day of a celebration: The priest's daughter Dagny's engagement to a rich lieutenant is feted. However, it turns out that a body was recently found in the forest. The dead man was a young theology student, unhappily in love with Dagny.

Who is this yellow-clad stranger really? He questions certain aspects of the town, ones that always were how they are. He takes a room at the hotel and begin to wander through the town during its light summer nights. He defends the one at the bottom of the pecking order and offers to buy a worthless chair for far too much money. At the same time, he lies about most things. Nagel switches between charming and revolting, he is sympathetic and disgusting. We are not able to put him in a box, and he is not able to put himself in a box. What is a lie, what is the truth? What is a dream, what is reality? Nagel might not know for sure himself, as he stumbles between insomnia, intoxication and the feeling of being endlessly in love.

The boundary-breaking Spanish star director Calixto Bieito is back at The National Theatre to wrestle with one of Norway's most recognised, discussed and controversial writers, whose books stand as strongly today as when they were written. Mysteries from 1892 was written early in Knut Hamsun's writing career, and reflects the writer's urge to move away from the realism of the time, to depict the human psychology.

The outsider's state fascinates and scares us even now. Who comes from the outside sees things in us that we are not aware of ourselves. He understands them in another way, and sees that something is not right. Through this meeting unknown aspects in the stranger also become visible."

Press coverage

Lillian Bikset, Sjelelivet lever og beveges og veksler i Calixto Bieitos kraftfulle Mysterier (literally: The life of the sould lives and moves and changes in Calixto Bieito's forceful Mysteries), Dagbladet April 10 2016:

"Rich in information, detailed, expressive, insightful. Bieito's adaptation of the text and his direction let metaphor slide over in parallel reality and parallel reality slide into metaphor. He ties connections across planes of consciousness, time, place. Through simultaneous actions and mirror effects the spectator is quickly put in a state of responsiveness, open for the mysterious, the grand and queer and wonderful. (...) The yellow-clad Nagel arrives the small town. Word by word the opening monologue is the text that opens Hamsun's novel. Jan Gunnar Røise performs it, and establishes Nagel as a kind of alter ego for the writer. A self-psychologising poseur, drawn out of the context of his life. On Røise, however, only the coat is yellow, as Martha Gude's hair on Heidi Goldmann's head isn't white, even though the words, also now, tell us that this is how it is. Staged contradictions such as these warn that in this story, one cannot believe all one hears or sees. Mysteries is a story in flux, like Nagel is a soul in flux."
