At the website of The Norwegian Theatre the following, among other things, is written about If/Then:

"How much have the small choices you make every single day to say for the rest of your life? Possibly everything?

If/Then is about one woman - but two different destinies, two parallel lives. Love, the battle for the environment - and modern urban planning - are the themes of this new New York musical, now turned into a proper Oslo story.

We meet Marianne: 38-year old urban planner who has recently moved back to Oslo after ten years and a collapsed marriage in Sogndal. She is ready to start over and has an appointment to meet Liv and Lukas in the park. Liv is a preschool pedagogue Marianne's neighbour, they have just gotten to know each other. Lukas is a buddy from her student days and a passionate environmental activist and house occupier, a driving force in the popular movement 'The Fjord City for All'. We follow two possible trajectories for Marianne - two parallel lives led - one as Mari and one as Anne. Mari stays in the park with Liv to listen to a hot street singer, whereas Anne goes with Lukas to a single-cause demonstration."

Press coverage

Lillian Bikset, Tilfeldigvis valgt (literally: Randomly chosen), Dagbladet January 17 2016:

"Tenk om (original title If/Then) is the second musical the Americans Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt have made together. The first one, Next to Normal, also discussed parallel realities - in the form of parallel perceptions of reality - and was also performed at The Norwegian Theatre in Norway. Also then Heidi Gjermundsen Broch interpreted the central role. As the schizophrenic Diana she was the recipient of Norwegian Critics' Award as well as The Hedda Award. Her efforts in the role of Marianne are also very strong - nuanced, near, complex, with emotional depth and credibility in song and acting - but the material isn't as strong as it was the last time around. Melodies are catchy, but a few too many of the (in particular first act's) songs are repetitions over the same theme, the character of the choice. That said, the strength of the performance is in the singing, as well. The major problems are in the dramaturgy, brought forward from the Broadway production."
