The purpose of Pikene på broen is to create a meeting point and a bridge over national borders and across disciplines. Among the projects of Pikene på broen are: Barents Spektakel, Barents Art Triennial and Transborder Cáfe.
One of the reasons behind starting Pikene på broen was the closing of Malmutvinningen AS Sydvaranger, upon which unemployment in Kirkenes would rise. Pikene på broen meant that art and culture could provide new employment and make Kirkenes a more attractive town to live in.
Pikene på Broen is as mentioned part of Border Dialogues - The Barents Art Triennial. This is an international project exploring how the human being experiences borders, physical as well as psychological. Between 2008 and 2010 the subject for the triennial was: What is the identity of the Barents region?
