More

Carte Blanche was established in 1989 as the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance. It is located in Bergen, the second largest city in Norway. From here the company tours extensively in Norway and is regularly invited to perform abroad. The aim is to reach a large national and international audience with the best of Norwegian and international contemporary dance. As a repertoire company Carte Blanche is free to collaborate with a wide range of elite choreographers, nationally and internationally.

Carte Blanche’s repertoire includes work by some of the best and most celebrated Norwegian and international choreographers including Ina Christel Johannessen, Ingun Bjørnsgaard, Jo Strømgren, Eva-Cecilie Richardsen, Ohad Naharin, Sharon Eyal, Rui Horta, Örjan Andersson, Kenneth Kvärnström, Guy Weizman, Hofesh Shechter, Club Guy and Roni amongst many others.

Besides these renowned choreographers, Carte Blanche strongly emphasizes commissioning work by a new generation of contemporary dance makers. The combination of both the up-and coming and the renowned results in an eclectic, exciting and high-quality repertoire that achieves the company's goal of being at the forefront of the creation, presentation and development of contemporary dance, both in Norway and abroad.

In addition to producing its own productions, Carte Blanche actively supports and co-produces choreographers and dance companies working on the free scene. The company plays an active part in the development of local and national cultural policy and takes part in several international networks. Its unique collaboration agreement with The National Venue of Theatre on administration and marketing has been recognized as an exemplary model of good practice for the cultural sector in Norway.

Carte Blanche is owned and funded by the Norwegian state (70%), the County of Hordaland (15%) and the City of Bergen (15%). The company is based in modern production facilities in Nøstet in Bergen.

March 17th 2010 Carte Blanche was awarded The Award for Design Excellence for its corporate design by The Norwegian Design Council (NDC).
