More

The Association was founded in 1962 under the name of De norske teatres forening (Association of Norwegian Theatres). In 1989 the symphony orchestras became members and changing the name was natural.

In 1998 NTO entered a collaboration agreement with the employer organization SPEKTER.
Most of the members of NTO also are members in SPEKTER and are included in this organisation’s main agreement and negotiation system.

On assignment by The Norwegian Ministry of Culture NTO registers and processes result measures and result indicators reported by the institution to the ministry the way or annual reports. Statistics are presented on the webpage of NTO, where one can also read the reports from each institution.

NTO is a member of PEARLE (Performing Arts Employers Associations League Europe). PEARLE is a European organisation gathering employers/producers within performing arts; theatre, opera, dance and orchestral music.

NTO shares offices with Performing Arts Hub Norway and The National Touring Network for the Performing Arts (NTNPA) with the synergy effect of promoting collaboration and competence development within the whole professional field of performing arts. Together NTO and Performing Arts Hub Norway own and manage the internet news site Scenekunst, which has its own editor and is edited following the declaration The Rights and Duties of the Editor, established by The Association of Norwegian Editors and The Norwegian Media Business Association.
